Cardiff Youth Council: Say What?!
For all you Cardiffians out there who feel like your voices aren’t being heard; for all of you who see problems in our wonderful city, but feel like there’s nothing that can be done; for all of you who want to make a difference, we present you with the Cardiff Youth Council.
The Cardiff Youth Council is a… well, council made up of young people from different organisations throughout the city, including Llygaid-y-Ddinas, U-Share, POTV, theSprout and more. The CYC aims to get the voices of young people throughout Cardiff heard by the people who make decisions about Cardiff.
Set up a couple of months ago, it’s taken us a while to get our feet off the ground but now we’re really starting to get places. As a council, we identified three core issues that, as a starting council we should tackle before we start focusing on the city-wide issues.
Firstly is relationships. A council can’t survive and can’t make changes if they don’t have contacts with the decision makers in Cardiff. As such, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to get a vast network of contacts throughout the Cardiff Council and other Cardiff-wide projects as well, such as the Voluntary Action Cardiff scheme.
Second is structure. We’ve been working really hard to come up with a strong, working internal structure for the CYC. We’ve managed to elect some of the roles within the CYC such as our two Co-Chairs, our Head of Social Media and our Head of PR. With more elections taking next week to decide upon Treasurers, Secretary and more, it won’t be long until we’re fully up and running.
Finally, we have communication. The CYC is going to be part of an exciting new project to develop the use of social media and communication within Cardiff. This will allow improved communication between young people within the city and should give young people more access to the information that adults discuss.
We’re still in the developing stage at the moment but so far things seem to be running nicely and we have a few small plans for the upcoming weeks, including some important meetings and lovely social gatherings. Throughout Cardiff there are two youth forums already set up: South and East, and we currently have plans for another four to be developed. We’re also going to work closely with community groups, including travellers, LGBT, young carers, young people with disabilities and more.
Should be fun, and you can come to theSprout for all you CYC news!
