Preview: Avenue Q
Avenue Q has been running on the West End, delivering songs of “mischief, bad behaviour and political incorrectness” for five years now and by what can only be described as a miracle, they are going on tour! Yes, my beloved and delightful readers, Avenue Q is touring throughout the UK and will be stopping in none other than Cardiff!
Avenue Q is a Tony-award winning musical that tells the story of a young “man” called Princeton who has just graduated from college with a BA in English… only to discover that that’s a useless qualification to have in life. With no job and very low funds, Princeton sets out to find a place to live and after starting off at Avenue A, he finds himself in the only place he can afford… Avenue Q.
Here, Princeton meets a variety of zany, crazy and just plain crude characters that show him there’s more to life than just his problems… such as their own problems.
Avenue Q is not for the faint-hearted, dealing with coming-of-age issues such as growing up, independency, pornography, homosexuality, strippers, drinking and sex as well as many, many others! The show doesn’t have a restricted age limit (except no under 5s, but that just seems obvious) but they do highly suggest that parents recommend discretion when deliberating whether or not their precious little darlings can go on and see the show.
My own opinion? Kids won’t get it as they won’t understand many of the themes in the musical. Teens my age and above will love it as the show is clever and the songs are witty and intelligent and deal with a variety of issues that some of us will be facing. As for the teens in between? I guess it’s up to their maturity. If they’re mature enough to look at these sorts of issues, go for it. They’ll love it. And they’ll think you’re really cool for letting them go!
In short, Avenue Q is not to be missed. Do you know how long I’ve wanted to see this show? Three years! And now I can! So don’t delay, get your tickets today. They’re bound to sell out fast as Avenue Q is only in Cardiff from the 14th to the 18th June at the Wales Millennium Centre.
