Review: Laura Stevenson & The Cans @ 10 Feet Tall
Laura Stevenson & The Cans
10 Feet Tall
12th September 2011
There is little better than accidentally finding your new favourite band at a gig that you’ve gone to on a bit of a whim.
It happened at the SWN festival, where I saw The Vaccines having never heard of them before, and it happened in 10 Feet Tall on Monday, where Laura Stevenson & The Cans played. Like The Vaccines, Laura et al must be destined for bigger things if people start hearing their work.
Somewhere between Kings of Leon and The XX, and probably a whole lot of folk rock that I don’t know about, LS&TC combine wailing, plaintive guitars, melancholic lyrics and the sweetest voice I’ve ever heard live. The room fell in love with Stevenson, who seems utterly effortless in both singing and playing guitar, and is also a natural at striking rapport with the crowd.
Their songs vary between upbeat, jigging folk and very stripped down songs, the focus of which is Stevenson’s amazing voice. The moment that she first began a song in her delicate, treacly warble was a definite “hairs on the back of the neck tingling” moment, and many songs after that were equally as beautiful. The band also consists of guitars, drums and an accordion which, far from being as twee as you might expect, blends in nicely to the songs to be less of a gimmick and more of an atmosphere-enhancer.
As you can tell I was thoroughly impressed, and I’m far from a fan of folk. So, I recommend you look them up and have a listen if you like anything in that style of music – they’re worth it.
