999 Or 101?
What is the difference between emergency numbers 999 and 101?
Emergency number 999 is the one that should be used to report endangering events, like crimes in progress, suspects, or threats and uses of violence.
101 is the telephone number you should use for less urgent events. These include situations such as reporting a crime or general questions, which do not require the immediate response of the emergency services.
South Wales Police recommends you should call this number if:
- Your car has been stolen
- Your property has been damaged
- You suspect drug use or dealing in your neighbourhood
You can also call to report a minor traffic collision and to give the police information about crime in your area.
101 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whether you call using a landline or your mobile, each call costs 15p (due to telephone providers’ costs).
When you call 101, the system will determine your location and connect you to the police force covering that area. You will hear a recorded message announcing the police force you are being connected to. 101 is available in Wales and England.
If you a hearing disability, you can text 18001 101. If English is not your first language your local police have access to professional interpreters so they can quickly translate your call.
If you would like to report environmental issues you should continue to call your local council at C2C on 029 20872087 for things such as reporting graffiti, dog fouling, abandoned vehicles, dumping and fly tipping, and vandalism.
