My dog Charlie is a Border Collie puppy. He’s seven-months-old this today and he’s black and white. He has a very waggy tail and one ear which flops and one ear which stands straight. He’s also very destructive.

We got our Border Collie on the 2nd June and he was very, very, very small. We travelled all the way up to Builth Wells in the Heart of Wales to collect our new family member. He cost £90 and it was a long, tiresome journey. Oh, and he threw up on the way home.

He is lying down next to me at time of writing, chewing on a bone my father gave him. Well, he was, now he’s climbed over to the other sofa and now he’s on the floor. And now back to my side. He’s very mischievous and very energetic. He likes to chew things. Anything. Everything actually. I no longer can leave my shoes in the hallway under fear he will rip them to pieces.

He also likes to eat. He likes his dog food, he likes our food: he even likes food he finds on the street, for example a muffin wrapper he found on the pavement yesterday. All the food he eats get turned into… well, I think you can guess. Unfortunately, he’s recently decided that the garden is not the proper place for his excrements. Instead, he has come to the conclusion that the kitchen floor is the best place for it.

Fortunately when we are over the park there is no kitchen floor for him to poo on. There is however a lot of dogs for him to play with. And when I say play with, I mean chase wildly while completely ignoring my incessant screams for to him “come here”. We have joined a dog walking club so that he can socialise with other young dogs and I have found that the dog-walking world is a friendly, generous community who enjoy sharing their lives with their dogs. It really does warm my heart to see so many people finding enjoyment and fulfilment through owning a dog.

Charlie is also an avid football fan: what could be better than watching grown men with nothing better to do with their spare time yelling abuse at each other? Nothing! Whenever he sees a game going on in the park he runs up to the edge of the pitch, lies down and watches the game until I drag him away under fear he’ll run onto the pitch and chew the ball.

Currently he is ripping a bag of jam donuts to bits. Fortunately my sister had previously eaten all the doughnuts so he should be fine. He likes to rip things: bags of doughnuts, tubs of chocolate, shoe boxes, loo roll etc. It’s all very difficult to clean up. Sometimes we bring out the brush followed by the dustpan, and sometimes we bring out Charlie’s worst enemy, the hoover!

The hoover: 8 metres of pure evil. Weighing in at a ridiculous amount this cruel and merciless machine (similar to a Dalek) eats anything that gets in its way, including small innocent puppies! What is the best way to deal with this imminent threat to puppies everywhere I hear you ask faintly? Well my dear friends, if your puppy is in danger of such a menace, it seems the best option is to bark relentlessly while snapping at, and chewing the end of the hose of said menace!

Charlie’s eyes are very bright and very innocent. Whenever I look at them I know that he’ll be my friend. He’s always there to listen to me and even though he jumps up on me when I’m wearing clean clothes, he’s always caring and kind. I hope Charlie lives a long and healthy life as he definitely deserves it.

I love you Charlie!

I absolutely love dogs, they are my favourite animal in the world. They are nicknamed man's best friend for a very good reason. They are so dedicated to their owners and are amazing company. Long live Charlie!
